Dyslexia is not a reflection of intelligence. It never has been. It is simply a different way the brain processes language, and for students who learn this way, finding the right environment can make all the difference.
Online learning, done well, is one of the most empowering environments a dyslexic learner can be in. And at Infinite Academy, we have built our approach around making sure every student can access learning in a way that works for them.
The Tools That Make the Difference
The tools available in a digital learning environment are genuinely game changing for students with dyslexia. Here is what we encourage families to explore.
Text to Speech is one of the most powerful tools available. By listening to text while following along visually, students can bypass the decoding struggle entirely and focus on what really matters, understanding and thinking critically. Our learning platform includes Fin, who will read the workbook out loud when prompted.
Speech to Text means your child never has to let spelling get in the way of their ideas. Voice Typing in Google Docs, Wispr Flow, Voicelink, and Dictate in Office 365 are all brilliant options that let students speak their thoughts directly onto the page.
Visual Scaffolding makes a bigger difference than most people realise. Dyslexia friendly fonts like OpenDyslexic or clean sans serif fonts like Arial and Verdana, plenty of white space, and high contrast backgrounds can all significantly reduce visual stress.
For Whānau at Home
Dyslexic thinkers are often incredible problem solvers, creative lateral thinkers, and big picture visionaries. Our role as educators and whānau is to make sure the systems around them reflect that.
If an assignment can be submitted as a video, podcast, or digital mind map instead of a written essay, we are absolutely open to that conversation. Creative evidence of learning is just as valid as a written one.
We Are Here
At Infinite Academy, accessibility is not an extra. It is the baseline. If your child is finding it hard to access the curriculum, please reach out to our Inclusion team.
Our digital door is wide open for everyone, and we will make sure it stays that way.
