When people hear "online school," community is often the first thing they assume gets lost. No hallway conversations. No lunchtime friendships. No sense of belonging.
At Aotearoa Infinite Academy, we see it differently. Since opening our virtual doors, we have been proving that connection does not require a physical classroom. They grow through shared experiences and intentional opportunities to connect.
The Virtual Social Day Effect
This term, our students came together for our second Virtual Social Day, an hour of icebreakers, a scavenger hunt, and a word scramble, all designed to help students connect outside of their regular online classes.
Then, we asked our community a simple question: "How has your experience at Infinite been so far?" Their responses were turned into a word cloud, highlighting words such as stupendous, amazing, awesome teachers, blessing and new beginnings.
When hundreds of students describe their school experience using words like these, you know something is working.
Bringing the Whānau Together, In Person
Online does not mean connecting online only. Last weekend, we brought our Infinite community together in person for our Auckland and Hamilton Meet Ups, and what a joy it was. It was a chance for students, families and staff to enjoy light bites, spend time together, and put faces to the names they had previously only seen on a screen.
We are not stopping there. Our Meet Ups continue in August across Nelson, Greymouth, and Christchurch, and we look forward to welcoming more families along.
Why This Matters
For a school built on flexibility, these moments matter. They remind every family that behind the platform is a genuine, growing community of people who care.
A school does not need four walls to create a sense of belonging. It needs intention, consistency, and a commitment to making every student feel seen, valued and connected.
That is exactly what we are building at Infinite Academy: one Virtual Social Day, one Meet Up, and one word cloud full of stupendous, amazing, and blessings at a time.
